Mukluks

muk·luk or muck·luck n
1. a waterproof boot made of animal skin or canvas that is large enough to be worn over shoes or several pairs of socks
2. a sealskin boot originally worn by the Inuit

For running in snow I wear gaiters, which are not quite as cool as mukluks but I like the word mukluk.

Snow tracks… going everywhere some walking through the “muck” of life, some finding new “luck.” I added my tracks to the collage as I ran.
Happy New Year
as we all turn the page.

Thursday Winter Walk

A long early morning head-full-walk.

Wed run and gathering

The Family Camp Christmas Gathering

The Wednesday morning run took me into the Minnesota countryside. I am not sure if it was the horses and red buildings or the sign, but I think I ran by a farm.

A number of celebrations including a 70th birthday! The party rings and crown come out as we gather with this playful family of artists, musicians and educators.

Snow Hotdog Roast

At least 8 miles in walking today!

Tonight Uncle Lyle forces the Texan Nephew and Niece out into the Minnesota winter wonderland to roast hotdogs and marshmallows.

Poor, poor Texans who never get to enjoy the snow!

Christmas Eve Pizza

Oh ya! The return of the traditional Christmas Eve Pizza!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
from the GrinerGUYS!
Lyle - Nick - Nate - Beryl

Nathan tries out his electric shock gum pack given by brother Nick.
(And I got the action shot!)

Cat Naps Listening to Jamie Cullum

Nancy and Tanya disturbed from sleeping by the camra. Cat naps on the coach while listening to Jamie Cullum has become our new favorite past time. Jamie Cullum a young British Jazz singer, song writer and composer was introduced to me by Nathan a few days ago. The cats and I can't get enough.

Tracks In the Snow

Christmas Eve morning by the pond…

Tracks in the snow.
Who? What? When? Why? Wondering?
Where do they lead?
Like the tracks, my mind wonders, aware of my own emptiness.
What? When? Where? Why? Who?
Christmas Eve… the waiting… the wondering? Probably with too many of my own expectations.
What will God do next? What does Christmas bring?
Hard to Trust
Hard to Hope
Hard to Let go and let God
What will Christmas bring?
It is always a surprise, never done in the ways or within the bounds we set or expect.
Follow the tracks! Follow the star! Follow your heart! Follow the still quiet voice of God!
But do follow, and keep learning to Trust.

Summer Kids

As I started running people kept asking two questions...
1. Are you going to run a marathon?
Answer... "I don't know."
2. Doen't it hurt your knees?
Answer... "No" But now... oh darn... left knee gets a doctor visit next week.

My real run in life... KIDS!
Some of this last summers favorites include...

The Episcopal Youth Event Peer Ministry team that gathered in Berea, KY

The whole Lee Valley Ranch, Black Hills, SD camp crew.

The Texas Discipleship Project crew where I got to team with Bubba Flowers!

Run Anyway

White sky, frosty cattails and snow in the air.

Pause to look... maybe forward, maybe inward, maybe backward or maybe just not sure.
Today may need to be a day to just say, "I ran anyway."

Cradles for the Words of God

I ran a different road today. To get there I had to weave through a number of residential neighborhoods. I sought a picture of a manger as I ran but only found candy canes, deer and spiral trees. So I cheated. After the run I drove till I found a nativity beside St. John the Baptist Catholic church. Frosty plastic covered the front so no one could steal baby Jesus, nor could anyone see in! But, at the upper left of the window there was a spot to shoot a picture. With extra photo shop work I was able to barely make out the manger and the straw.
The manger is the Christmas symbol for the containers of the words of God. I like that the word of God is a person, not just a book. I like that the word of God is also understood in your story, my story, and our story. I like that I am finding God everywhere I turn and am learning to recognize a word of God in everyone I meet. Like finding the hidden manger behind the plastic I may need to aim my view in a new way. So it is that I find these words, signs and wonders in new places and new people. I too will keep seeking new running roads and the hidden discoveries.

GrinerGUY house

It's official! The foosball table has risen from the depths of the basement to greet all who enter by the front door. Another change, another identifying indicator that this is the GrinerGUY house.

Snowshoe Day

Walking on water, Minnesota style.

The temperature was 6 below this morning but got up to about 13 degrees. After a walk in the woods the body warms up and it feels right to enjoy the outdoors.

“Little Sister Heidi” leads the way on the trail and helps me walk through a bit more of my own life journey. –Thanks!

Back to the Pond

It is strange how Christmas Music can be so wonderful and seem so hopeful then suddenly, become something to be avoided at all costs, at least for this season. Despite the music going out of Christmas, I forced myself to get back to the pond. It is a very cold day to run but with a sun that still shines, just setting sooner on this day than I had hoped. So yes, the music ends, but with a blessings and a laugh. "And also with you."

An Old Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Gloria

Nick's band, Gloria, plays in front of 660 people before they turn people away at the doors. The band tries out their Richard Simons look just for fun!

Walk On: By Nathan Griner

Nathan’s repertoire includes one gospel sounding song. The title and his song have become my need, desire, necessity, and hope. Stepping out into the unknown can only be done with something called faith. Stepping out takes us outside our comfort zones, is always risky and moves us beyond what we have known or the past rules we have created.

Walk On
by Nathan Griner

Jesus walked on water not to prove he could
But to show the world that he loved them
I took a step out but I fell right in
But that don’t mean I don’t have faith in him

Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
I took a step out (I took a step out)
Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
But that don’t mean that (but that don’t mean that)

I know I’m a liar
I’m a sinner child
Wrapped up in this grand illusion
I took a step out but I fell right in
But that don’t mean I don’t have faith in him

Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
I took a step out (I took a step out)
Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
But that don’t mean that (but that don’t mean that

I’ve been running from the devil
Searching for my faith
Trying hard not to stray too far the lord will guide my way

Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
I took a step out (I took a step out)
Walk On (walk on)
Walk On (walk on)
But that don’t mean that (but that don’t mean that

Style

A high school girl describes the way I work with kids.

"Although your job was to train us for a week of service you truly "trained" us for a lifetime. And I don't really quite know how you did it. You created an environment in which we learned from each other, not just from you. You really allowed us to create our own environment, our own bonds. I never felt there were any superiors we were just a group learning together from each other.

In my own life I try to take that idea into the groups I work with whether it is for school, church, or other groups."

–Micheal (Kansas)

Brrrr....

Meet the Gazelle! The indoor run when the temperature is 7 below with a wind chill of 22 below.

Quote I found clipped to the side of the file cabinet…

“I arise in the morning torn between a desire to change the world, and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” –E.B. White

And maybe when it is 7 below with a 22 below wind chill it would be best just to plan the day from my bed. Brrrrrr….

Sundog

Brrr... Cold... It's an indoor exercise day for this Minnesota boy. But I did jump out of the car this morning to catch a picture of the morning sun.

Waycoss Indiana

Waycross Conference and Retreat Center, Morgantown Indiana, a beautiful facility off the beaten path nestled in the hills and forest 90 minutes south of Indianapolis. I highly recommend it for comfort, food, hospitality and beauty.

The Saturday afternoon run/walk took on a path that led into the woods, up a hill following a scenic ridge. Three times I scared up deer. The fallen leaves are thick hiding the roots, nuts, rocks and other hidden obstacles, so I walk until I come to a gravel road that follows a winding crystal clear creek.

The group is small, but comes from Nebraska, Iowa, Kentucky, Indiana and myself from Minnesota. They are delightful, fun and very appreciative. I leave with the sense that these people are hungry for new ways to enter into kid’s lives. I pray they will have the courage and persistence it takes to make changes.

Much of Peer Ministry is about welcoming which necessitates the “C” word: CHANGE, a theme that keeps resurfacing for me throughout the weekend. If a youth ministry group, a church, or even a personal friendship welcomes someone than change is inevitable. Welcoming reshapes dynamics, space, ways, familiarity, comfort, customs, traditions, leadership, dreams and what ever it is that has become known as “normal.” At their hearts churches want be known as welcoming, but the church often seems unable to adapt and react, threatened and fearful putting up defensive walls. It is hard to keep up with a world that spins in rapid arrays of changes. Answers are complex, but begin with a willingness for churches to claim their own mission to welcome, include, accept, care, and embrace all of God’s people and creation. Welcoming imposes an acceptance of “new normals.”

My run draws the fresh chilled air into my lungs as I find myself being more conscious of my own new journeys and new prayers for patience and acceptance for what I may find around the next turns on life’s road.
